“Pakistan floods are ‘a monsoon on steroids”

~ UN Chief ~

Pakistan is drowning. The worst natural disaster in the country’s history has led to the internal displacement of over 33 million people, and killed over 1,000. They need food, clean water, and shelter.

Pakistan has the world’s sixth-largest population and is a significant regional power. However, 20.5 percent of its population is undernourished, with 82 percent of children deprived of daily, nutritious meals. The average Pakistani household spends over 50 percent of its income on food, making them vulnerable to changes in food prices. This limits their resources for other essential items, such as clothing and medicine.

Against this bleak backdrop, beginning in July, Pakistan has been lashed by monsoon rains, leaving devastation and chaos in their wake.  It was already the case that up to 21.7 million people lack access to clean, safe drinking water, with over 40 percent of the population lacking soap and handwashing facilities. This increases the likelihood of the spread of water-borne diseases like cholera and typhoid.

And because access to clean water is limited, due to the floods, this situation will worsen. It is essential that aid organisations provide chlorine tablets for purifying water and oral rehydration salts for treating diarrhoea, especially in children. Such heavy rains will also stimulate mosquito reproduction, which will fuel outbreaks of malaria and dengue.  We must act now to prevent the spread of water-borne diseases.
